The Glebe Scholar Program

Explore. Discover. Thrive.

Welcome to The Glebe’s center of cultural arts, social sciences, and spiritual development! At The Glebe, we are committed to the idea that each individual desires personal growth, security, fulfillment and choice, and has the right to experience life to its fullest through self-determination.

The Glebe Scholar Program provides residents of The Glebe with opportunities to enjoy world-class entertainment, to participate in community engagement through lecture and discourse, and to develop their spirituality through faith-based programming.

Cultural arts encompass art, music, literature, and related intellectual activities. Blessed to have two Boston grand pianos on-site, The Glebe has hosted David Stewart Wiley, Maestro of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, with colleagues such as Pastor Philip Bouknight and his wife, Tara, and Concertmaster/violinist Akemi Takayama.

Other notable performers who have visited The Glebe recently include world-renowned guitarist and luthier, Wayne Henderson, well-known concert pianist Deanne Vance, and performers such as Phyllis Stump whose one-woman show as Aunt Orlene Puckett is also performed at the Puckett Cabin on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The social sciences embrace the exploration of human society through seminars and symposiums within the range of history, political science, psychology, economics, anthropology, and sociology. The Glebe Scholar Program’s seminar series is led by professionals in their respective fields and provides residents with a creative outlet for learning and social interaction. Addressing our residents’ desires for learning beyond the confined space of a college classroom, The Glebe Scholar Program allows them the freedom to become immersed in the enjoyment of learning again.

Previous programs have included kite science with the experts from the American Kitefliers Association, histories of notable women in southwest Virginia through a local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a discussion with Dr. J. Holt Merchant of Washington & Lee University about the unintended consequences of the Civil War.

Spiritual development is one of the guiding principles of The Glebe’s mission statement, and one of the options presented through The Glebe Scholar Program. We offer a variety of programming on-site and off campus which addresses our residents’ needs and desires for their personal spiritual growth including Bible studies, ecumenical symposiums, spiritual autobiography, and off-site programming through local churches and retreat centers.
